Installing WordPress from command line

Assuming that you are familiar with ssh or putty, you can install the latest WordPress package from the command line, without having to download to your local computer and uploading the folder to the web server again.

1. Login to your server

Yes, login into your web server using your username / password using ssh.

2. Download and install the latest WordPress package

  1. cd /public_html/tmp (go a temp location)
  2. wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz (get the install package)
  3. tar xfz latest.tar.gz (untar the install package)

All archived files from WordPress have the installation files under a wordpress directory.
You can now move the files to the root folder of the website files by using the following commands:

mv wordpress/* ./

That’s it. You can now continue to install WordPress from the install URL as normal.
