Installing Logwatch on CentOS Server

Logwatch is a very useful server reporting tool which we use alot at Indra Design. We regularly receive queries from clients asking how to install and configure Logwatch on their servers.

The instructions below are specifically for CentOs 6.2 but can be adapted for other version of Linux as well.

  1. Get the Logwatch program using wget: wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/logwatch/logwatch-7.4.0/logwatch-7.4.0-1.noarch.rpm
  2. Then install it: yum logwatch-7.4.0-1.noarch.rpm

That’s it! Easy to install. Now we will configure Logwatch to send a report email.

  1. Open up /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf and change the “Output = stdout” to “Output = mail
  2. Change the “MailTo = root” to “MailTo = youremail@yourhost.com

That’s it, you can check other parameters in the logwatch.conf file, but the default values should be OK for most people.
